Pinaceae

The largest conifer family with 11 commonly recognised genera and about 230 species. It is predominantly a northern hemipshere family with only one pine species (Pinus merkusii) occurring south of the equator.

Centers of diversity are California/ Mexico and mainland southeast Asia and the Sino Himalayan area. The majority of species occur in temperate climates and various species form the dominant component of boreal, coastal and montane forests. Many are of high economic importance.
