This variety occurs at high elevations between 3000 and 4000 metres above sea-level in coniferous forests.

Global rationale
Known from five (possibly six locations) with an area of occupancy of <500 km², this variety occurs at high alpine altitude where grazing pressures often prevent regeneration after past logging.
Global threats
The primary threat has been logging followed by subsequent grazing of regeneration by livestock. Their impact has led to an ongoing decline.

The Government of China has recently imposed a logging ban in western China
