Cupressaceae

A diverse family that occurs on all continents except Antarctica. Habitats range from sub-Arctic tundra to montane tropical rainforest to hot arid deserts.

Habits range from the largest and tallest trees to prostrate creeping shrubs. The IUCN currently recognise 22 genera, of which 17 have five or fewer recognised species. Over the last two decades there has been considerable debate about generic delimitations, particularly in Cupressus, Chamaecyparis, Xanthocyparis and several of the monotypic genera. Further information can be found under entries for each genus
