Cupressaceae

Juniperus blancoi var. huehuentensis R.P.Adams

Endemic to Durango in the Sierra Madre Occidental where there are less than 600 individuals

Distribution

Endemic to Mexico in the Sierra Madre Occidental in the State of Durango where it is restricted to the smmit area of The Cerro Huehuento with an estimated 270 individuals while the Cero Mohinora locality has an estimated 300 individuals.

Habitat and Ecology

This taxon is found at high altitude under trees (Juniperus deppeana var. robusta) and on rocky outcrops in the summit area of mountains. This is a subalpine shrubby form of J. blancoi presently only known from two mountain summits at 3150–3270 metres above sea-level.

Conservation Status

Global status

Vulnerable D1+2

Global rationale

The restricted distribution small population size indicate an assessment of Vulnerable under the D1 and D2 criteria. Grazing has been observed at one of the two localities but it is uncertain if there is any decline. If decline becomes evident then this taxon would qualify for listing as Critically Endangered.

Global threats

The peak of the type locality is grazed (cattle, goats), and regeneration appears to be absent (Adams pers. comm. March, 2012).

Conservation Actions

The two known localities are a Natural Protected Area and a community forest management unit.
