Pinaceae

Larix gmelinii var. olgensis (A.Henry) Ostenf. & Syrach

A relatively common timber species from northeastern China and the Russian Far East. Extensive logging in the Russian far East and past exploitation in China has likely caused a decrease in the population.

Distribution

Recorded from NE China: Jilin, E Liaoning; North Korea; and the Russian Far East: Sikhote Alin Range

Habitat and Ecology

This taxon is generally more montane in its occurrence than the other varieties, due in part to its distribution in regions with a less severely cold, semi-oceanic climate. It is, like the others, also found in the margins of swamps and lakes. It is found from 400 m to 1,800 m a.s.l.

Human Uses

This variety is exploited as a timber tree.

Conservation Status

Global Status & Rationale

Near Threatened

Assessed as Near Threatened as the rate of exploitation combined with increased fire frequencies and forestry practices that favour other species indicate an overall decline approaching the thresholds for Vulnerable under the A criterion.

Conservation Actions

This taxon occurs in a few protected areas.
