Podocarpaceae

Nageia fleuryi (Hickel) de Laub.

A small tree usually restricted to karst limestone areas, mostly in Vietnam, Lao PDR and southern China . The timber is selectively logged for use in fine crafts.

Description

Taxonomic notes.

This species differs from Nageia wallichiana in that stomatal lines are found on both sides of the leaf and the receptacle below the seed is not swollen.

Distribution

Recorded from China: Guangdong (Gaoyao, Longmen, Zengcheng), Guangxi (Hepu), Yunnan (Mengzi, Pingbian); Viet Nam and Lao PDR (Thomas et al. 2007). Reports of this species from Cambodia are likely to be the result of misidentifications with Nageia wallichiana. The extent of occurrence is considerably in excess of 20,000 km². No credible estimates for area of occupancy have been made. It is known from more than 10 locations.

Habitat and Ecology

Most often found on limestone formations (karst) in mixed angiosperm/conifer forest; also in montane tropical rainforest dominated by evergreen broadleaved angiosperm trees. Recorded from 500 up to 1,200 m asl.

Human Uses

The wood is used for fine crafts, musical instruments and chopsticks. Leaves have traditional medicinal uses in some areas.

Conservation Status

Global Status and Rationale

Widely distributed but with disjunct populations throughout northeast Viet Nam, Lao PDR and southeast China. The extent of occurrence falls outside the threshold for Vulnerable and no estimates exist for the area of occupancy. The timber is valued and is being selectively logged in significant parts of its range. A past decline of up to 29 % is likely to have occurred within the last three decades especially in the southern parts of its range. Although generation lengths are uncertain, it is highly probable that a single generation length would exceed 30 years. On this basis it is assessed as Near Threatened as it almost qualifies as Vulnerable under criterion A2d.

Global Threats

In some parts of its range, selective logging and deforestation has led to a decline in the area of occupancy, the quality of habitat and probably the number of mature individuals.

Conservation Actions

This species is known from a few protected areas in northern Viet Nam, Lao PDR and China. The percentage of the total population within these areas is unknown. A limited amount of in situ conservation work has been initiated in northern Viet Nam. Further field work and monitoring of existing subpopulations is needed.
