Araucariaceae

A small family with three very distinctive genera - Araucaria, Agathis and Wollemia. Most species occur in the Australasian and Malesian regions, especially New Caledonia where 14 of the 20 species of Araucaria occur along with 5 of the 16 Agathis species. Wollemia is monotypic and was only discovered in 1994 in New South Wales.

Several Araucariaceae species are large, emergent trees that may be locally dominant and are also ecologically and economically valuable. In popular culture this family is often associated with dinosaurs: while the lineage dates back over 200 million years, the extant species are much more recently evolved
