Cupressaceae

Juniperus flaccida var. martinezii (Pérez de la Rosa) Silba

Distributed in several States across central Mexico where threats include land clearance for agriculture, grazing by goats and fire

Distribution

Mexico: Aguas Calientes, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Veracruz, San Luis Potosi (?). Restricted to a few subpopulations, but apparently some only relatively recently recognized and there are probably more to be found.

Habitat and Ecology

Juniperus flaccida var. martinezii occurs in montane Pinyon-Juniper woodland, pine-oak forest and woodland, and oak woodland. The altitude range is 1400–2400m according to herbarium collections

Human Uses

Not recorded, its wood may be used as with other Mexican junipers for fence posts and firewood.

Conservation Status

Global status

Vulnerable B2b(ii,iii,v)

Global rationale

This taxon was first recognized and described as a species in 1985, from a few localities in Jalisco. Subsequently, collections were made elsewhere (most are logged in Mexican herbaria) and it is possible that more will be found. Despite this, a continuing decline is inferred from the fact that there is much clearing for agriculture and grazing that affects junipers, among which are trees of this taxon. Its AOO is here calculated with a grid width of 8km to account for missing localities, but still falls well under 2000km² so it meets the criteria for Vulnerable

Global threats

Only known from a limited number of locations in which forest cover is decreasing overall, this variety could be at some risk of extinction. This taxon grows on ranch land, so is subject to fire and goats grazing, etc.

Conservation Actions

This variety is not recorded from any protected area.
