Indochina

Fires may be the result of natural phenomena such as lightning or they may be man-induced. Usually natural fires are an integral part of plant community development and influence such things as soil nutrient availability and biological diversity. In contrast, uncontrolled or wildfires disrupt such processes and can have a catastrophic impacts. The vast majority of wildfires are intentionally set and often occur in conifer forests. In recent years extended droughts, together with the rapidly expanding exploitation of tropical forests and the demand for the conversion of forests to other land uses, have resulted in a dramatic increase in wildfires. While some conifers have evolved to be fire dependent by having serotinous cones that open and release their seed in response to fire, their populations are so small or fragmented that even natural fires may be catastrophic. This is particularly evident in areas with a Mediterranean climate. It is the introduction of inappropriate fire regimes (frequency, severity, or seasonal timing) that can have the most severe impact.

Abies delavayi subsp. fansipanensis (Q.P.Xiang) Rushforth

Amentotaxus hatuyenensis T.H.Nguyên

This species was described in 1996 from the karst limestone areas of Hagiang province in northern Việt Nam. Recent field work and molecular research indicates that this taxon is conspecific with Amentotaxus yunnanensis. Consequently it is due to be removed from the IUCN Redlist. Read full species entry >

Amentotaxus poilanei has only been recorded from a single locality on the Ngoc Linh massif in Kontum province. General deforestation and trans national road building may be threats in the near future. Read full species entry >

Calocedrus rupestris Aver.,T.H.Nguyên & P.K.Lôc

Calocedrus rupestris was first described in 2008 from Việt Nam: prior to this Calocedrus trees occurring on limestone karst  were wrongly identified as Calocedrus macrolepis.  In 2011 C. rupestris was discovered in Guangxi. Cephalotaxus mannii Hook. f.

Although widely distributed in southeastern Asia it is often targeted for its timber. Futher threats include the conversion of its habitat to agriculture land which has resulted in severe forest fragmentation. Read full species entry >
