Podocarpaceae

Falcatifolium sleumeri de Laub. & Silba

This species is till only known from a single collection from the mountains of the Vogelkop Peninsular. Logging is a potential threat that jsutifies a precuationary assessment of Near Threatened.

Description

Taxonomic Notes

Falcatifolium sleumeri is still only known from a single sterile specimen cllected in 1960. It has been distinguished from other Falcatifolium species by its very small leaves and prostrate habit. More field work is required to establish its distribution and taxonomic uniqueness.

Distribution

Currently only known from Mt Nettoti, Vogelkop Peninsula, New Guinea (Papua/Irian Jaya), Indonesia. The extent of occurrence is assumed to be less than 100 km² and area of occupancy less than 10 km².

Habitat and Ecology

Stated to occur in “dark mossy forest” so presumably a ground covering species under a canopy of trees. The altitude is given as 1,920 m above sea level

Human Uses

No uses have been recorded for this species and it is unlikely to be used given its growth form as a small shrub

Conservation Status

Global Status

Near Threatened

Globa Rationale

This species is assessed as Near Threatened on the assumption that it has avery localised distribution and in an area potentially subject to logging (Sujatnika 1995). More fieldwork is required before a more robust assessment can be made.

Conservation Actions

This species does not occur within a protected area. Further field studies are required to determine the status of this species.
